Who Was John Will?
John M. Will, for whom John Will Elementary School is named, was an education reporter for the Mobile Press Register newspapers in the 1950's and ‘60s. Will was highly regarded by his peers and became legendary for his expertise -- about education, in particular. Through adversity, he was still praised for his reporting skill and his keen insight into Mobile’s public school system.
Because of his tenacity and genuine interest in education, his contemporaries named a school in his honor. The school is known for its special education and gifted and talented programs. When Will died at 60 years old, in 1965, he left money to establish a scholarship for college and university journalism students. This fund has grown from contributions over the years. Now, the John M. Will Memorial Foundation awards at least two students every year with the John M. Will Memorial Journalism Scholarship.
